How to Avoid a Water Loss in Your Home

There are several things that can be done.  First, know that the most common cause is the supply line to your refrigerator.

  • Check the condition of the refrigerator water supply line and it’s connections at least annually.
  • Have your major appliances checked by a local appliance shop annually.
  • Replace the water supply lines to your cloths washer every 3 to 4 years.

If you leave for extended periods of time:

  • Go to your breaker box and turn off the breaker to your water pump
  • Shut off your water main coming into your house
  • Have a friend check on your home daily while you are gone

Remember Murphy’s Water Loss Law…if it can happen, it will happen right after you walk out the door.

Do's and Don'ts of Water Damage

  • Do make sure everyone is safe!  This is the most important first step.  If everyone is safe and unharmed, the rest can be fixed.

  • Do contact a restoration company immediately.  You do not have to wait for your insurance agent or adjuster.  Remember, time is a tremendous factor.  Decide what professional you will call BEFORE IT HAPPENS.

  • Do shut off the water coming into your home.  However, only do this if you are 100% sure it is safe.  DO NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES.

  • Do put pictures and important papers in the freezer.  Freezing the water in these items prevents further damage.  It is more likely to salvage them if they are first frozen.

  • Do Not endanger yourself or others.  Damage to your home can be fixed.  Never endanger yourself or others.

  • Do not call your insurance agent and tell them you have water were it doesn’t belong.  If you are 100% sure you are going to file a claim, go ahead and tell them…if not…don’t.  Many agents are required to report all losses to corporate, and these losses can go against you, increasing your insurance rates.  This is not always the case, but occasionally it is.  What we recommend is asking a hypothetical questions such as:  “If I had a this (give your case), would it be covered, and what is my deductible.”  This gives you time to decide if you are going to file a claim.  Consult with your restoration company.

Be Prepared!

Research today.  The last thing you want to be doing if you have water in your home is trying to figure out who to call first.  Call your insurance agent, you already trust them, and ask who they would use in their own home.  Contact this company and ask for emergency contact information.  Post their number where it can be seen.

On a Personal Note…

Kodiak Restoration is committed to bringing your home back to normal faster.  We understand the anxiety brought on by a water loss, and we genuinely care about the well being of you and your family.  From a customer service stand point, we treat every job like it is my mom’s house.  How would I want her treated. (Yes, I like my mom, No I don’t need therapy).  From a quality of workmanship view, I ask myself “would I want my family living here when I am done.”  I have several satellite offices around Bozeman and Belgrade, you know them as coffee shops (my dad was a police officer).  When a client walks in and notices me sitting across the room, if they walk over and say hello, then I have done my job of customer satisfaction.  Helping you through a tragedy is a privilege, and it is our goal to make it as painless as possible.  If you would like references please call.

When there is a water were it doesn’t belong, drying speed matters.  We use the most powerful drying system available to our industry.  Fast drying of contents and building materials means less demolition, less headaches for you, and it greatly reduces the potential for mold to grow.

Could you do your job if you didn’t have any education or training?  Unfortunately, there are some in our industry who do not have adequate education to do the job correctly.  I am an IICRC certified Master Water Damage Restoration Specialist.  If you would like more information about the IICRC, visit them at www.iicrc.org.  We also demand excellent customer service from ourselves and all who may be working on our job sites.
